Byron has written this poem to his beloved. He narrates the sorrow and feeling of parting in this poem. Poet expresses the situation, how they parted and therefore poet said,

‘When we two parted, In silence and tears’

Poet expresses that what is happen when his beloved was about to leave, none of them utter a single word and situation became unbearable as they were parting from each other not only for days one or two but ‘for years’. After that, poet blames the hour when the lover and beloved together as happy hour itself for told it the separation that both lover have to face in the future.

Poet talks about ‘Dew of morning’ which fall like the warning bell as the poet thinks that whatever the lover is feeling now sorrowful situation. Further in the poem, Byron said that vows that are broken which indicate beloved of the lover is no more with him. And that she has broken all her promises which she gave once and she is not there to keep her promises. Poet heard the name of the beloved from relatives and friends, it’s shameful.

When people around the lover take name of his beloved feels like ‘knell’ to this ear.

‘They know not I knew thee who knew thee too well’

which means poet not only loved her but understand every emotions of her. Now when she is not with him, he regrets why he loved her so much and it becoming unbearable situation of separation for him.

In the last, poet expresses his grief on their meet and he calls the spirit of his beloved is deceived as her heart can forget whatever quality time they spent together secretly. After years when they meet they have only silence to express and tears to share.

                        ‘After long years,
                         How should I greet thee?
                         With silence and tears’
